E-Math — Algebra support that helps you work it out

MOE/SEAB Elementary Mathematics (4052 / SEC K310) Number and Algebra strand: algebraic manipulation, linear and fractional equations, simultaneous linear equations, quadratic factorisation and equations, indices, standard form and graphs of functions.

10 tracked MOE/SEAB skills, from algebraic expressions and manipulation to problems in real-world contexts (algebra). The tutor asks focused questions, you test the next step, and the understanding stays yours.

What an e-math — algebra tutor covers

Each skill is tracked separately so strong chapters never mask a shaky prerequisite.

  1. 1

    Algebraic expressions and manipulation

    Foundation skill

Expand brackets, simplify linear and fractional algebraic expressions, and evaluate formulae.

  2. Solve linear equations in one variable and represent linear inequalities on a number line.

  3. 3

    Two-step and fractional equations

Builds on Linear equations and inequalities

Solve multi-step linear equations and equations involving algebraic fractions.

  4. 4

Variables on both sides and changing the subject

Builds on Two-step and fractional equations

Solve equations with unknowns on both sides and rearrange formulae to change the subject.

  5. 5

    Graphs of functions and gradients

Builds on Two-step and fractional equations

Find gradients and straight-line equations y = mx + c, and sketch linear, quadratic, reciprocal and exponential graphs.

  6. Solve simultaneous linear equations in two unknowns by substitution, elimination and graphical methods.

  7. Factorise ax² + bx + c, difference of two squares and four-term algebraic expressions by grouping.

  8. 8

Quadratic equations (completing the square & formula)

    Builds on Factorising quadratic expressions

Solve quadratic equations by factorisation, completing the square and the quadratic formula, and locate turning points.

  9. Apply the laws of indices (positive, zero, negative and fractional) and calculate in standard form A × 10ⁿ.

  10. 10

    Problems in real-world contexts (algebra)

Builds on Two-step and fractional equations

Formulate linear, simultaneous and quadratic equations from Singapore exam word problems and interpret solutions.

Illustrative Dialogue

How an e-math — algebra session unfolds

The student starts by asking for the answer—and ends up solving the key step themselves.

TranscriptIllustrative E-Math — Algebra dialogue
  1. Student

Can you just do number 4 for me? 3x + 5 = 20. I don’t even know where to start.

  2. Tutor

I won’t solve it for you — but starting is a skill, and we can practise that. Look at the left side: two operations are being applied to x. Name them, in the order they happen.

  3. Student

It’s multiplied by 3, and then 5 is added.

  4. Tutor

Exactly. Undoing works like unwrapping: the last thing done comes off first. Which of those two operations do you undo first?

  5. Student

    Undo the +5 first, so 3x = 15. Then divide by 3… so x = 5?

  6. Tutor

You reasoned that out yourself — I only asked. Now check it rather than trusting it: put 5 back into the original equation and tell me what the left side comes to.

About this illustrative example

Progress & Family View

How skill progress is recorded

Sessions build a clear skill record for the student and a calm, read-only summary for linked parents.

  • One bar per skill

Mastery is tracked skill by skill, not as a single subject percentage, so a strong topic cannot hide a weak one.

  • The hint level counts

Getting something right with one small hint moves the bar more than getting it right after five. The number we show you reflects how much help you needed.

  • Built from an event log

Every attempt, hint and explanation is recorded as an event, and the bars are calculated from that history. It can be replayed, which means the numbers are reproducible rather than asserted.

  • A parent sees the same numbers

A linked parent gets the same skill bars, the last judgement and its line of evidence behind each level, the recent session summaries and the flag counts — read-only, and nothing that is not also on your own pages.

10 skill bars, tracked independently

In e-math — algebra, that means 10 separate skill bars — algebraic expressions and manipulation, linear equations and inequalities, two-step and fractional equations, and the rest — each updating based on verified problem steps. Linked parents see the same topic bars and session takeaways in read-only mode.

Questions & Answers

E-Math — Algebra FAQs

Common questions from students and parents about studying this subject on tutor.ai.

Does the tutor solve equations for me?

No. It works one step at a time and stops to ask what comes next. If you ask outright, you get a question back and exactly one hint rather than a finished solution.

What does an Algebra session usually start with?

A short check of where you are: what you tried, where it went wrong, and which of the ten Number & Algebra skills is worth working on today. Then you choose the problem.

Can I bring my own homework questions?

Yes — type them, upload the worksheet as a PDF, or photograph the page. The tutor reads your own question either way: a PDF as text, page by page, and a photo as a picture with your next turn. If a file cannot be read — a PDF that is only a scan, or a picture too large to pass on — it says so rather than guessing at what is in it.

How do I know whether I have actually improved?

Each of the ten Number & Algebra skills has its own mastery bar. A bar rises when you get something right with little help, so you can see which skill is holding the next one up instead of guessing from a single mark.
